The Natchez Trace Parkway will host the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians for a Choctaw Heritage Celebration on Saturday, November 5, 2011. The event, in commemoration of American Indian Heritage Month, will be held at the Parkway Visitor Center (milepost 266), just north of Tupelo, MS, from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.
“The history of the Parkway and Mississippi is intertwined with the history of the Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Natchez Indians. We hope this event will help foster an appreciation for the traditional Choctaw culture, and we are thrilled that representatives from the Mississippi Band of Choctaw are coming here to share it,” said Terry Wildy, Acting Chief of Interpretation for the Parkway.
The celebration will include traditional social dancing by the Chahta Alla Youth Council at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. and ongoing demonstrations of traditional clothing, beadwork, and basket making by members of the Department of Chahta Immi.
This program is free of charge. For additional information, please call the visitor center at 662-680-4027 or 1-800-305-7417.
