Trip: Two B&B Visit to Canton, Mississippi

Canton, MS is located about 15 miles north of Jackson and 9 miles northwest of the Natchez Trace Parkway. On a January trip to the area I stayed at two bed and breakfasts located in Canton: Heart's Content and McWillie-Singleton House.

Several highways lead to Canton from the parkway. The closest access to town from the parkway is via Mississippi Highway 43 at milepost 115. Both north and south of Highway 43 the parkway runs along the western edge of the Ross Barnett Reservoir.

At the northern end of the reservoir where the Pearl River begins to widen you will find two Trace stops that are worth taking a few minutes to explore: River Bend and Cypress Swamp. The best view of the reservoir is naturally at a place called Reservoir Overlook.

I spent a night at Heart's Content B&B near the Courthouse Square on Peace Street. The home was built in 1903 and has been lovingly restored by Alex and Sharon, the innkeepers. I stayed in the Pond Room on the main floor. Three more guest rooms are upstairs.

The accommodations, hospitality and breakfast were excellent. One very unique thing about this B&B is the two-person elevator. The original owner of the house was elderly and usually confined to her upstairs bedroom. She had the elevator installed so that her somewhat portly family doctor wouldn't need to go up the stairs when he made house calls! Click on the picture to the right to see several pictures including the elevator.

Onto the circa 1861 McWillie-Singleton House B&B just around the corner from Heart's Content on Center Street. Center Street was the location where most of the movie "My Dog Skip" was filmed. Jim and Melanie, the innkeepers, have DVDs in each room of three movies that were filmed in Canton: My Dog Skip, A Time To Kill and O' Brother Where Art Thou.

I stayed in the huge Singleton Suite. After climbing up into the King Tester Bed I watched My Dog Skip. One of the large common area rooms is now a Billiard Room. Upstairs, are two more guests rooms on either side of the War Room Library common area where you will find a large collection of Civil War books and memorabilia.

Fortunately I had some time "to kill" so I took in the Courthouse Square area and the Canton Film Museum. To tour the film museums I went to the Canton Welcome Center on the square. They showed me two rooms from O' Brother - the restaurant scene and the general store where George Clooney's character tried to buy Dapper Dan. Then we went to a two story building located on one of the square's corners where parts of A Time To Kill and My Dog Skip were filmed.
