Saturday April 20, 2019 - Saturday April 27, 2019
April 20-28, 2019 has been declared National Park Week, and this area is fortunate to have access to two nearby national parks: the Natchez Trace Parkway and Natchez National Historical Park. The Natchez Trace Parkway provides a relaxing scenic drive between Natchez, Mississippi, and Nashville, Tennessee, with historic sites along the way like Emerald Mound, the second largest Indian mound in the country.
The historic sites of Natchez National Historical Park are found entirely within the city of Natchez and are open to the public seven days a week. They tell stories from the wide spectrum of Natchez history.
The week will kick off with free public tours of the Melrose mansion on Saturday, April 20th. Tours begin at 10:00 and 11:00 am, 1:00, 2:00, 3:00, and 4:00 pm, and are limited to 20 persons. Walking trails lead into the ornamental gardens at the site, and one of the slave cabins houses exhibits related to slavery in the Natchez area.
The park’s William Johnson House and Fort Rosalie sites are always free to visit.
The week will close with a special free presentation about the life of noted artist John James Audubon at 1:00 pm on Saturday, April 27th in the Natchez Visitor Center, which is the primary visitor center for Natchez National Historical Park and the Southern Terminus Visitor Center for the Natchez Trace Parkway. It is currently displaying a traveling exhibit on the Forks of the Road slave market.
