A message from the mayor:
One of the great things about this monument is not only does it commemorate those individuals who were proud to take a stand in 1965 — not only does it tell that chapter in Natchez history — but the most beautiful part is that it says to everyone, ‘It’s OK to talk about it.’
The Proud to Take a Stand monument culminates years of planning by the city and private partners. More than 400 names have been engraved on the marble monument, and more than 150 of those are names of the young men and women forced to Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman in October 1965, where they were humiliated, punished, and abused for days. They became known as survivors of what is called 'The Parchman Ordeal.'
This monument will honor those Natchez-Adams County citizens who were wrongfully incarcerated in 1965. This, our first Civil Rights monument helps tell part of the Civil Rights history of Natchez. No tour of civil rights history in the Deep South would be complete without a visit to this site.
Darryl Grennell, Mayor
