Bicycling the Natchez Trace

In late June 2010, Mary and Denise biked the Natchez Trace Parkway from Nashville, Tennessee to Jackson, Mississippi. Below is an account of their cycling trip and several photos that you can view.

We had a great trip biking on the Natchez Trace from Nashville to Jackson during the last week of June, 2010. The Bed & Breakfasts were lovely, and we thank the innkeepers who took such good care of us. We were very pleasantly surprised to have the use of laundry facilities at most of the B&Bs.

The Cottage is darling at Natchez Hills B&B near Hohehwald, TN, and there are ambitious plans for a future vineyard there. In Collinwood, TN, Dianne made us comfortable at Miss Monetta’s Country Cottage. The front porch with its rocking chairs was most relaxing after dinner at the deli.

Tom, innkeeper at Sachem in Baldwyn, MS, went out of his way to warn us of severe weather. Breakfast at Sachem included homemade bread and coffeecake. Carol, at Bridges-Hall Manor B&B in Houston, MS, has a home filled with art and antiques. We hope to take advantage of her gourmet dinners next time.

Staying at historic French Camp B&B was like taking a peek into the past. Don’t miss the Mississippi Mud Pie! Debra left us a perfect self-serve breakfast, so we could make an early start to beat the heat.

Finally, we loved McWillie-Singleton House B&B in Canton, MS, outside Jackson. Innkeeper Jim showed us several historic homes in town, and we walked the thriving town square. Later, we watched the film "My Dog Skip" (filmed in Canton) and chowed down on popcorn provided by Jim. The next day Jim and assistant innkeeper Russell helped us get to Jackson Airport for our rental car.

The innkeepers seemed happy to have cyclists and tended to our comfort. Cyclist friends have expressed a desire to bike the Natchez Trace, so let’s keep the momentum building. We’ll definitely do this again, at a cooler time of year! Friends are already telling us they want to go with us. Our goal is to bike the entire Natchez Trace, from Nashville to Natchez.
